Osmington — Dorset, England

Osmington is a small village in Dorset, situated on the World Heritage Jurassic Coast, within minutes of Osmington Hill where the chalk figure of King George III sits majestically astride his horse. This ancient area with Bronze Age settlements, Barrows, Stone Circles and ancient wells; plus Iron-Age artifacts and a Roman Road still in use, document over a millennia of people connecting the past to the present. Throughout the ages Osmington was a fishing and agricultural village; until the 20th century. The picturesque thatched cottages reflect their medieval lives, while residential buildings dating back to the 16th century still predominate. Today the village dynamics have been modified by the numerous affluent commuting families and retiring seniors who have chosen to live here, including second homes for those seeking the quiet coastal life of the village and its environs. Walk the narrow streets and you will find paths leading to magnificent vistas on the South West Coast Path, or will take you down a brief path to Osmington Mills with its rich 'romantic' history of smuggling with its safe haven in the adjacent Ringstead Bay. Landscape artist John Constable immortalized the area with his paintings; just as Rudyard Kipling's "Smuggler's Song" romanticized smuggling.
